Just 60 more cases of this masterpiece, which Juhlin calls “incredibly concentrated and... basically identical to big white Burgundies from Lafon or Ramonet.” He goes on to urge decanting the wine to bring out its aromas of “nuts, toasted bread, lemon, new barrels, buttery dense creaminess, and deep oily exoticism,” finally exclaiming “The wine is incredibly rich... has anyone else done this well in this mediocre year?” Well them’s fightin’ words. I find all ‘97 fragrances, purple like irises and violets; density you can scent; billowy cumulonimbus of fruit and caramel and pound cake; this is what great Champagne not only tastes like but acts like, deft and fluid and transparent yet with length and resolve; it’s full of a kind of sandalwood malty caramel note from the casks, but they alone cannot impart the power of fruit here, the intensity and drive. This ‘97 recalls the fine ‘92, but with less oak and more focus.
