The 2009 Carmignano Santa Cristina in Pilli wraps around the palate with bold red cherries, flowers, spices and a hint of tobacco. This is an especially fleshy, deep wine endowed with considerable textural richness. Today the aromas and flavors are still quite primary, but another 6-12 months in bottle should bring further development and nuance. The wine turns darker and meatier with time in the glass. The Santa Cristina in Pilli is 75% Sangiovese, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Canaiolo and 5% assorted red varieties, aged in a combination of Slavonian oak casks and smaller French oak tonneaux. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2018.
Ambra is one of my favorite under-the-radar estates in Tuscany. Every year I taste the wines and marvel at the consistent quality the winery is able to achieve at what remain very favorable prices for the consumer. These are fabulous wines that merit a far wider audience than they have today.
