Domaine Alain Gras   Burgundy, France

Saint-Romain is a tiny, picturesque 100ha village (of which Alain owns 15) set high up on a hill overlooking Meursault and Pommard, and Alain Gras is considered by some its unofficial mayor.  Truly an ambassador for his appellation,  Alain through his skill as a winemaker and his ebullient personality, has "has been in the vanguard of putting Saint-Romain on the map", according to Clive Coates.  He is featured on many of the finest wine lists in France and many (including Dominique Lafon) consider him the best winemaker in the region.

Alain Gras and his family started the domaine in 1979. They are enviably located with soils rich in clay and limestone in the choicest areas of the St. Romain appellation.  Alain's first vintage was 1982. In 1998, he took over his father's vines, thus doubling his holdings.  In addition to the St. Romain Rouge and Blanc that he produces, he also has an old vine Auxey-Duresses Rouge which is from 104 year old vines.  This is Burgundy that goes with most food and is affordable enough to be drunk often!
