Stephen Pannell

Stephen Pannell comes from a history rich in Australian winemaking.  The Pannell family founded Mosswood Wines, one of the original wineries in the Margaret River, in the late 1960’s and currently reside in Pemberton after establishing Picardy wines in Western Australia in 1993.  Raised in a family siding with the great wines of the “Old World” directed Steve toward Burgundy where he worked under Dominique Lafon for a handful of vintages after already spending time in southern France and also Italy where he had a stint in Barolo.  After returning home to South Australia Steve landed a job at Wirra Wirra before moving on to Hardy’s Tintara and then on to Chief Winemaker at BRL Hardy Wine Company.  The techniques he learned abroad; open-top fermenters, minimal use of new oak and overall minimal intervention, were cast upon the exceptional raw material of McLaren Vale and Steve made a name for himself.  In 2004 Steve’s own label was born, S.C. Pannell.  After years in the McLaren Vale and with ties to serious fruit afforded the Hardy’s outfit, Steve had access to some of the best parcels available; 90+ year-old, dry-grown Shiraz, 70+ year-old, dry-grown Grenache, high demand Sauvignon Blanc from Kuitpo in the Adelaide Hills and a handful of Shiraz parcels around 35-45 years-old.  With this and his conviction that Australia had the potential to produce wines that are pure and excellent without manipulation, Steve has established himself as one of the top boutique winemakers in Australia.
