Old Bastard Vine

The Kaesler family sprung from Silesian pioneers who came to the Barossa Valley in the 1840's.  They cleared the scrub and in 1893 started planting out the entire holding with Shiraz, Grenache, and Mataro well into the 1930’s. Additional vines were planted in the 1960’s, 1970’s and up to the early 2000’s. The gnarled, dry-grown vines still remain today and provide the backbone of the intense, ‘Old Vine’ wines that are produced here. The exceptional Kaesler wines now being produced had their beginning in 1997 when a young winemaker at Cellarmaster, Reid Bosward, just a few hundred meters away noticed the power and intensity of the fruit and decided to take a chance.  The ‘Old Bastard’ vineyard, Shiraz planted in 1893, is what initially piqued his curiosity but he soon came to find multiple 25-75+ year old Grenache vineyards, multiple 50-75+ year-old Shiraz vineyards, a 25-75+ year-old Mataro vineyard and a slew of other Cabernet, Viognier and Cabernet Franc vineyards. After cultivating the fine estate fruit for a few years another 100+ year-old vineyard, The Bogan, was purchased down the road in Marananga. And the rest, they say, is history.
