Bonny Doon Vineyards, and its proprietor, Randall Grahm, need no introduction. This was the very first winery to enter into the Michael Skurnik Wines portfolio! The winery focuses on Rhone varietal blends, adhering to strict Biodynamic viticultural practices since 2004.
The essence of Bonny Doon is discovery; a voyage into areas which may have been beyond previous realms of experience. This is not to suggest that everything they do is new or cutting edge. Indeed much of what is done at Bonny Doon takes its inspiration from practices employed in simpler, less industrial times. That being said, there are some fairly esoteric techniques included in the Bonny Doon canon. These include Biodynamic practices in not only the vineyards and winemaking, but for the environment as well. Also, the knowledge that the term "winemaker" is specious; the winemaker does not "make" the wine any more than he (or she) is responsible for converting the sunlight that strikes the leaves of the grapevines into sugars and more complex flavor components elaborated within the grapevine. Thirdly, the belief that screwcaps are a far superior form of closure to the more prevalent 17th century technology commonly referred to as a "cork."
Randall Grahm is a vitizen of the world, a champion of the strange and the heterodox, of the ugly duckling grape varietals whose very existence is threatened by the dominant Cabo- and Chardocentric paradigms.
He lives in Santa Cruz with his muse Chinshu, their daughter Amélie and his thesaurus. |
