Kingston Family Vineyards   Casablanca Valley, Chile
In the early 1900s, CJ Kingston left his home in Michigan looking for gold in Chile. While he never found his mother lode, his search yielded a 7,500-acre cattle ranch in Chile’s Casablanca Valley. Five generations later, his descendants are showing the same pioneering spirit, exploring new frontiers in Chilean winemaking.

From the beginning, Kingston Family has been different from other Chilean vintners. We are mostly Americans spending part of our time in Chile (although day-to-day operations are managed by Chilean family members). This American perspective helped us recognize that our hillside location—only 12 miles from the Pacific—bears a strong resemblance to California’s coast with its rolling hills, long growing season, and cooling ocean currents. Looking to the boutique producers of the Santa Rita Hills and the Sonoma coast for inspiration, we became the first Casablanca vineyard to focus on cool-climate pinot noir and syrah, along with the more-widely-planted Sauvignon Blanc.

Our vineyards were first planted in 1998 with the goal of selling premium fruit to other vintners. Aspiring to be a Hirsch or Pisoni of Chile, we decided to produce limited releases of our own wine that show the best of our vineyard. Our Napa-based consulting winemaker, Byron Kosuge, brings to Kingston Family 20 years of experience at California producers, including Saintsbury, Miura, and B. Kosuge Wines. In the same way that he has worked closely with standout California vineyards—such as Talley, Hirsch, Hudson, and Gary’s—to create single-vineyard bottlings, Byron focuses his attention on the terroir in the Kingston Family vineyards, developing each unique block over time, so the wines all show something of where they were grown.  Evelyn Vidal, our winemaker in Chile, is Byron’s partner on the ground in Casablanca.  Before joining us, Evelyn worked three harvests in Napa and Sonoma Valleys in California and studied at Universidad de Chile. Evelyn met Byron when she was working for a season at MacRostie in Sonoma. Evelyn is a rising star among Chilean winemakers and has been featured in several articles on the emergence of women winemakers in Chile.
