Domaine Roulot   Burgundy, France

Run today by Jean-Marc Roulot, this is one of the most hallowed domaines in the region.  These are Meursaults of uncommon clarity and purity; rarely are the differences between vineyard sites as vividly illuminated as they are here.  Jean-Marc practices organic farming; in the cellar he uses 15% new oak, mainly from the Allier forest, which integrates seamlessly into the wines’ silken, perfectly harmonious structures.  Speaking about his dislike of over-stirring the lees to obtain richness, Jean-Marc says: “I prefer to lose a little volume and power on the palate in order to obtain the ligne droite and the purity” (from Clive Coates’ Cote d’Or © 1997).  This haunting purity and directness is evident in every wine Roulot produces, from its standout Bourgogne Aligote to its epic Meursault-Perrieres.  The estate also makes scant quanitities of red Monthelie and distilled Fine de Bourgogne.
