David Duband is a young, Beaune Wine School-educated vigneron working with enviable holdings in Nuits-St.-Georges, Gevrey-Chambertin, and Vosne-Romanee. He is yet another of the new generation of French winemakers trying to revitalize family vines whose fruit had long been sold in bulk to negociants. Since his first vintage in 1991 (when he was still a student!), David’s wines have improved every year, and he has been working to increase the domaine’s holdings. Now practicing 100% organic farming, he crafts rich, fairly masculine reds, using up to 55% new oak; however, the terroir is unmistakably etched into every wine. Whereas his first few vintages were oak-driven, he strives today to make more elegant wines that express their place of origin. Duband also has a sure hand with Chardonnay, producing a very Meursault-like Hautes Cotes-de-Nuits Blanc. Don’t miss these terrific values! |
