Domaine des Lises   Rhone (Northern), France

Maxime Graillot, son of famed Crozes-Hermitage pioneer Alain Graillot, began making very small quantities of Crozes-Hermitage with the 2004 vintage, and we have been thrilled with the results ever since. Compared to Alain’s wines, Maxime’s are similarly exuberant and expressive, yet perhaps with a bit more size and fruit power to them—possibly a result of the fact that Maxime de-stems nearly all of his grapes, whereas Alain does not de-stem. Maxime shares a cellar with his father, and ages his wines in used Burgundy barrels just like Alain. Beginning with the 2007 vintage, Maxime has begun to produce a dynamite St. Joseph, from a plot in Saint Jean de Muzols in the heart of the original appellation. All of these wines are made in minuscule quantities, and they always sell out quickly.
