Hirsch Winery   California, USA

Hirsch Vineyards is located on an exceptional, unique site along the second ridge in from the Pacific Ocean. Its location on a hilltop gives it the necessary elevation to avoid the cool fogs that roll in off the ocean which would otherwise make winemaking impossible.  One of the pioneers of the now famous Sonoma Coast, David Hirsch arrived in the late 1970s and planted his first grapes in 1980.  Currently, the vineyard has 47 plus producing acres planted mainly to Pinot Noir.  His vineyard quickly gained a great reputation as the fruit source for wineries including Siduri, Flowers, Kistler, and William Selyem.

After years of supplying Pinot Noir to many of the state’s best wines, Hirsch decided to try his hand at creating wines from his own vineyard.  The 2002 Pinot Noir, produced from 100% estate-grown fruit, was the first vintage for Hirsch.

Operationally, the emphasis is on gentle, but thorough, fruit handling, sanitation, and the proper environment for the wine. As soon as the fruit is picked, it is taken to the cool room. It is inspected in the field, before destemming, and every berry is checked post destemming. They have dozens of small open top tanks that match the size of the individual vineyards, so fruit from one field is not mixed with that from another. There is no pumping of fruit or wine. After fermentation, the wine is placed in French oak barrels. No blending or racking is done until bottling. Hirsh does not filter or manipulate the wine. Each step moves according to its own timetable.

Their acidic complexity and the balance of tannins and fruit distinguish our wines. In most vintages they are drinkable soon after release; yet, due to their structure, balance, and the absence of any additives, there is the potential for extended cellaring. After enjoying a few bottles early in their life, do consider setting aside some for longer aging. You will be rewarded.
