It's not every estate that boasts an observatory: when owner Otello Bettarini retired to country life in the Empoli hills west of Florence, he combined the management of the estate with his passion for astronomy and built an astronomic observatory on the property! Wine amphorae dating to Roman times have been discovered on the Piazzano estate, proof positive that this piece of land has been regarded as particularly favorable for grape growing for centuries. An unusual feature of the land is that it straddles a geological fault, thus many varied plots of differing soils and sub soils are found on the property, each of which is vinified separately in order to preserve unique characteristics. The final blending of the best vats results in the Chianti Riserva (produced from the best vineyard sites) and the Chianti "Rio Camerata" (named for a small river below the vineyards), a delicious, forward "everyday" Chianti blend that is one of the greatest values in the de Grazia book!
Piazzano is a practicing organic winery. Integrated insect and disease control is followed and only copper and sulfur-based products are used. Piazzano does not use systemic plant protection products. Insects are monitored with pheromone traps. If insecticides are nescessary, Piazzano chooses biological products made with a bacterium that attacks only specific insects. Botrytis is controlled through agronomical practices such as green pruning and defoliation. Leguminous crops are sown on every other row between the vines and the grass cover is left in place during the winter in order to prevent soil erosion. Low doses of SO2 are used to preserve the wines. |
