“…a relatively new and red-hot producer.” –Wine Spectator
Just down the hill from the Revello brothers’ estate, Mauro Molino’s winery sits only about 100 meters from the noble “Conca” vineyard of the Annunziata. Mauro first bottled in 1985, and makes just a few hundred cases a year of cru Barolo, now assisted by his son Matteo. The structured, aromatic “Gancia”, is from limestone-rich soils right next to the Bricco Luciani, and the intense, exceptional “Conca” from Molino’s small holdings in that cru. Parker describes Molino’s Barolo as a “delicious, tasty fruit bomb. These are often massive wines that have the potential to last over 20 years.” The harmonious Barolo normale was awarded two glasses by the Gambero Rosso Guide (and 91 pts Spectator!) along with the other two Baroli for the 1998 vintage, but it was the Barbera ’Alba “Gattere” 2000 that won “Tre Bicchieri”; the wine was described as one of the greats of the Langhe. Molino's “simple” Nebbiolo Langhe is a great bargain for pure Nebbiolo fruit without extended oak-aging. Recent vintages have been awarded a slew of 90+ point ratings across the board by all of the major international publications!
Integrated insect and disease control is followed. Control treatments are carried out only when strictly necessary (an expert consults for the estate). Sulfur- and copper-based products are mainly used. A minimum number of insect-control treatments are applied and only with low-environmental-impact products. Natural cover crops (grass cover) are left in the rows between the vines. In autumn the soil on
every other row between the vines is tilled. Only organic fertilizers are used. Very low doses of SO2 are added to the wines (the minimum to prevent oxidation).
