"This is a fabulous set of new releases from Cantina del Notaio, one of Basilicata’s leading estates. From top to bottom, these may very well be the finest wines I have ever tasted here." - Antonio Galloni, The Wine Advocate, June 2010
"Cantina del Notaio is an excellent source for the Aglianicos of the Vulture district in Basilicata. The consulting oenologist is Professor Luigi Moio of the University of Naples, a man who is behind many of the region’s up and coming estates." - The Wine Advocate, Feb 2008
“One of the finest Aglianicos I have ever tasted.” – Robert Parker, Jr.
“The region’s new star” (IWC).
The vineyards of the renowned Aglianico del Vulture DOC are located on the steep, black volcanic slopes of Mount Vulture in northern Basilicata, where high altitudes between 450 and 620 meters ensure a long period of ripening and provide for excellent structure and complexity. In March of 2010 Aglianico del Vulture was elevated to DOCG status making it Basilicata's only recognized DOCG.
Upon inheriting the Cantine del Notaio estate from his father, a notary public and namesake of the winery, Gerardo Giuratrabocchetti took aim at restoring the ancient glory to the wines of the Vulture. Together with his wife Marcella (below) and famed enologist Luigi Muoio, they rebuilt and restructured the winery to become the internationally recognized superstar they are today. These handmade Aglianico wines from the esteemed Rionero zone are fragrant and sweet in the nose, with powerful yet restrained tannins and dense blue- and blackberry fruit with licorice notes. The estate's 27 hectares are divided into 5 different vineyards, and with the exception of 1 very old-vine vineyard, each is planted with identical plants of the same age. Notaio’s cellars are located in a group of ten underground tuffa grottos dated to the early 1600s (above) that once belonged to Franciscan monks. The estate is at the forefront of clonal experimentation, with 40 different ancient clones currently under cultivation for study by the Lucanian Agency for Agricultural Development. Cantine del Notaio is Certified Organic and Biodynamic. |
