“To my taste, the current line-up of wines is the best ever made by Caterina and winemaker Niccolo d'Afflitto.” – International Wine Cellar, Jul/Aug 07

"The powerful and elegant wines of Caterina Dei continue to rank among the leaders of the pack in Montepulciano" - The Wine Advocate

"The wines of Caterina Dei are always of good character and good, and in some cases, excellent quality." - Gambero Rosso

The Dei family produced their first wines from their estate in the heart of the historic appellation of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano in 1985.  Now run by Caterina Dei, the estate has become one of the leaders in the region, producing lush, perfumed, fruit-driven wines that are exquisite expressions of the local Prugnolo clone of Sangiovese, blended with small amounts of Canaiolo and Mammolo.

The vineyards, on the slopes below the picturesque town of Montepulciano, extend over 36 hectares and are divided mainly between the crus of Martiena and Bossona.  The Vino Nobile Riserva Bossona, which comes entirely from the best positions in that Cru, got 91 points in the Wine Advocate, and is considered one of the best expressions of Montepulciano terroir.

In addition to the normale and Riserva bottlings of Vino Nobile, Dei also produces a stunning super Tuscan called "Sancta Catharina." This blend of 30% Prugnolo (Sangiovese), 30% Syrah, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10% Petit Verdot ages 12 months in French Allier oak, and was scored 93 points by the Wine Advocate for the 2001 vintage.

All of the Dei wines are fermented in stainless steel tanks and aged in large oak Botte, except for the Sancta Catharina.  The Rosso di Montepulciano is a young, fruity Sangiovese/Canaiolo (80%/20%) blend vinified in stainless steel and briefly in large oak botte that’s great for every day drinking.

Pest control treatments are used as little as possible. No systemic plant protection products (products which act by systemic transport – through the sap of the plant) are used. Low-environmental-impact products are used. Only organic fertilizers are used and only very low dosages of SO2 are added to the wines. A new cellar is being built following the guidelines of ecologically compatible architecture. Energy will be provided by photovoltaic solar panels.
