Caggiano   Campania, Italy

"Caggiano is one of Campania’s leading producers. The strengths here are the reds, which are some of the most up-front, immediate Aglianicos readers are likely to come across." - Wine Advocate, June 2010

"Antonio Caggiano makes some of the most delicious and accessible Aglianicos in Campania, making his wines a great choice for readers who want to explore one of Italy’s most fascinating grapes. Caggiano offers three selections of Aglianico. The entry-level Tari, the Salae Domini and the top-of-the-line Taurasi Macchia dei Goti." - The Wine Advocate, issue 182 (April 2009)

“One of the bright, shining newcomers to emerge from Campania.” – Robert Parker, Jr.

“One of the new stars for reds in Campania… now this is Aglianico!”  - Wine Spectator

"A visit to this estate - one of the most beautiful in Campania - is an absolute must as this is one of Italy 's finest producers. In particular, the Macchia dei Goti Taurasi has to be considered one of the benchmarks for this DOCG, and for the aglianico variety as well." International Wine Cellar

The Taurasi DOCG of down-south Campania is the source of some of the most exciting serious reds in Italy today, due to the recent emergence of small, high-quality estates in a region previously dominated by large concerns.  It’s all about Aglianico in Taurasi: the volcanic-soil vineyards are at high altitude and temperatures are not so hot as might be expected, allowing for slow maturation on the vine.  The high natural acidity and tannins of this grape maintain structure, and a complex, rich bouquet of black fruits and berries, tobacco and woodsy aromas make these enticing wines at excellent prices!

Architect, photographer, and grape grower Antonio Caggiano bottled the first Taurasi under his own label in 1994; he was one of the first small estates on the scene in Taurasi to do so.  Today Caggiano bottles three different versions of Aglianico, all of which express different personalities of the varietal:  fruity, medium-bodied young vines “Tari” (“An excellent value” – Parker); dense, modern-styled and barrique aged Salae Domini; and powerful, concentrated and brooding Taurasi “Macchia dei Goti” DOCG, aged three years (one in wood) as according to DOCG laws.  The white “Fiagre” is a blend of Fiano and Greco partially aged in barriques; a floral and honey-scented white with tangy acidity.

The estate takes part in a program sponsored by the Campania Region for integrated insect and disease control. The bureau provides subsidies to estates practicing organic agriculture and using techniques that reduce their environmental impact. Strict inspections ensure progress and results. Sulfur and copper-based products are used in accordance with organic guidelines to combat mold and pests. The soil is analysed regularly and, when needed, only organic fertilizers are used. Cover crops are left between the rows of vines and their cuttings are tilled into the soil for additional nutritional value. Low doses of SO2 are added to the wines to ensure freshness and quality.
