"...These remain some of the most interesting wines being made in the Marche today." - The Wine Advocate, issue 182 (April 2009)
“Boccadigabbia proved two important points in the 1990s. First, that superior wine can be produced in non-traditional areas of the Marches. Second, that a series of non-traditional grapes could also adapt themselves to the local climate and soil. In terms of the sheer variety of high-class wines, this is the leading estate in the region...” –Wine Advocate, #152 (April 2004)
This estate is a portion of the land which was owned by the former Bonaparte administration. It was inherited by Napoleon the third, and during this time "French" varietals were introduced to this area (predating the current craze for “international” varieties by almost 200 years!). The father of the current owner replanted the vineyards maintaining the same layout so that today excellent wines made from Cabernet, Pinot noir and Chardonnay are produced together with more traditional ones based on Montepulciano, Sangiovese and Verdicchio. In the very capable hands of Elvidio Alessandri since 1978, Boccadigabbia is currently one of the top estates in the Marche. Their 100% Cabernet Sauvignon “Akronte” 2001 was recently awarded 92 points from the Wine Advocate and their Chardonnay Montalperti 2003 received 90 points from Daniel Thomases in Veronelli!

The Boccadigabbia estate is certified and subsidised by the Marche Region for the use of low environmental impact substances (integrated insect and disease control), but it is not Certified Organic. The Le Marche region imposes strict environmental standards that Boccadigabbia meets and also exceeds in their practices. Only organic fertilizers are used, if necessary. Cover crops are left between the rows of vines and every 3-4 years the plants are tilled into the soil for natural fertilizer. Boccadigabbia uses low doses of SO2 in the wines to ensure quality after the wines are released onto the market. |
