With eight hectares of old vines in Diano d’Alba, and a rare bottling from the tiny Barolo township of Verduno, brothers Claudio and Matteo Alario produce deep, intense wines from Dolcetto and Nebbiolo. Dense and intense Dolcetto "Costa Fiore" has a distinctly minerally core, with a long finish of raspberry, cassis and almond. The estate continues to expand their Nebbiolo selections with the purchase of a second Barolo vineyard, "Sorano," in Serralunga d’Alba, the first release of which comes from the 2004 vintage. Two other Nebbiolo wines are also available: the elegant Nebbiolo “Cascinotto” comes from vineyards bordering the Barolo DOCG zone, and the Barolo “Riva,” which stands out for its intrinsic elegance, is produced in tiny amounts from a vineyard in the lesser-known and smallest Barolo township of Verduno (it received 93 pts for the 2004 vintage from the Wine Spectator.) The 2009 Gambero Rosso Italian Wines guide awarded every single wine produced by this estate “Two glasses,” confirming this small winery’s superior status.
Farming practices:
Integrated insect and disease control is followed. Only sulfur and copper base products are utilized. Only organic fertilizers (manure) are used.
Vigour of vines is kept low (this to obtain lower production per plant and therefore higher quality). Cover crops (grass cover) are left between the rows, the crops are mowed and the plant substance is tilled into the soil in autumn in order to “air” the soil and to provide organic material.
Low doses of SO2 used in the wines. |
