Bodegas y Vinedos Huarpe   Mendoza, Argentina

This brand new winery (named after the natives of the Cuyo) was established in 2002 by 3 fourth-generation descendants of the Piedmont-native Pasquale Toso (of Toso sparkling wine fame). In charge of winemaking is Italian and German-trained winemaker Carlos Jose Hernandez Toso, chief winemaker of Luigi Bosca, while Carlos Jose’s cousin, Alejandro Toso, former agricultural engineer of Pascual Toso, manages the vineyard. The new company is based on old family vineyards that Pascual Toso planted in Barrancas, where they have 65 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon (yielding 2.8 tons per acre), 45 acres of Malbec (yielding 2.7 tons per acre), 47 acres of Chardonnay (3.5 tons per acre), and some Sangiovese, Ugni Blanc, Chenin Blanc, and Semillon. The bodega makes three lines: Huarpe (seleccion de bodega), Taymente, and Lancatay. Wines are vinified in their winery, which is equipped with stainless steel tanks, and then aged in French and American oak barrels.
